THE 2010 Malaysia Games is not shutting the door on tennis yet.

Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek will fight for the inclusion of tennis in the biennial event at the Malaysia Games council meeting after Hari Raya.

Malacca will host the 2010 Malaysia Games.

“I have spoken to Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam on including a few more sports in the Malaysia Games and he is open to the idea.

“I will bring up this matter in the coming Malaysia Games meeting,” said Ahmad Shabery after the announcement of the WTA Tour’s Malaysian Tennis Classic at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort yesterday.

“A sport is only included in the Malaysia Games if the host state and eight other states support the idea.

“It will boil down to whether they are willing to support the inclusion of tennis.

“Yes, I am aware that tennis is an Olympic sport and it should be a priority in the Games.”

The organisers opted to drop tennis from the Malaysia Games last year.

The Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia, in an effort to get tennis back into the Games, saw its three appeals also thrown out by the Malaysia Games council.

The organisers had then claimed that the existing facilities in Ayer Keroh were not good enough to host tennis tournaments.

However, despite their claims, the Ayeh Keroh Tennis Complex hosted the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Grade Four Junior Championships in March.

With Malaysia hosting world class tournaments like the ATP Malaysian Tennis Open (Sept 26-Oct 4) and next year’s WTA Tour’s Malaysian Tennis Classic, it would be a disgrace if tennis is not included in the 2010 Malaysia Games.

It also defeats the government’s efforts on promoting Olympic sports in the country.

FOUR national wheelchair tennis players have been at the receiving end of ‘aces’ since Oct 1 after they were dumped in the changing rooms of the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Kuala Lumpur.

The men’s and women’s changing rooms, located at the centre’s Indoor Stadium, have been converted into makeshift quarters for their use.

There are no beds in the changing rooms, and players, after a hard day on court, have only mattresses to rest on.

The Merdeka Stadium Board, which runs NTC, had no other option as it had leased all rooms on the centre’s ground floor to the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (LTAM).

The players affected are national No 1 Che Abu Samah, Kee King Hong, Fahmi Safwan and Izzatul Dollah. They are coached by Nadir Asyraf.

The players feel let down as the least they expected were decent living conditions.

Also, they have had to bear the occasional stench from the toilets, especially in the mornings.

A player said even the centre’s cafe employees are treated better as they are provided with air-conditioned rooms.
